The principle of operation of the marine diesel engine
Most internal combustion engines operate according to a single principle – they convert the thermal energy generated as a result of fuel combustion into mechanical energy. This transformation is provided by a crank-connecting rod mechanism and a complex cylindrical system. It is here that the forward movement of the piston turns into torque. The latter is directed through the shaft to the electric generator or propeller.
Compressed air is constantly supplied to the cylinders of the marine engine. The pressure of this air is several times higher than atmospheric. Organized “boost” contributes to an increase in drive power. A huge number of modern vessels are equipped with such systems which feature a large number of cylinders. The “boost” system in this case can be gas turbine or mechanical.
