Marine engine

ICE is an abbreviation for the internal combustion engine. For the first time this type of drive began to be installed on ships at the beginning of the twentieth century. It quickly became clear that the use of diesel equipment can significantly reduce the cost of sea transportation. Today, ICE is installed on most of modern ships.

The operation of the marine diesel engine is based on the principle that fuel is burned inside the working chamber of the equipment. In the process of such combustion, the energy required for the mechanical start of the motor system is released. Depending on where such an engine is installed, there are:

  1. The main marine diesel engine, whose task is to create enough energy to move the vessel through internal mechanisms.
  2. Auxiliary * marine engines, the work of which is aimed at starting of pumping equipment, various generators, ventilation system and not only.

Diesel marine engines are often used in shipbuilding. These devices allow you to ensure economical fuel consumption. A wide range of devices is presented in the Smv Vest catalog. You can review it on the website.

The principle of operation of the marine diesel engine

Most internal combustion engines operate according to a single principle – they convert the thermal energy generated as a result of fuel combustion into mechanical energy. This transformation is provided by a crank-connecting rod mechanism and a complex cylindrical system. It is here that the forward movement of the piston turns into torque. The latter is directed through the shaft to the electric generator or propeller.

Compressed air is constantly supplied to the cylinders of the marine engine. The pressure of this air is several times higher than atmospheric. Organized “boost” contributes to an increase in drive power. A huge number of modern vessels are equipped with such systems which feature a large number of cylinders. The “boost” system in this case can be gas turbine or mechanical.

The main advantages of the main marine engine

Marine diesel is knowingly called the “heart” of any vessel, be it a large liner or a small private yacht. The key advantages of this type of drive include:

  • long service life – the marine engine is made of high-quality, wear-resistant parts and structural elements with a guaranteed long service life;
  • relatively high efficiency – up to 50% on average (gasoline marine drives have lower indicators);
  • ability to function in reverse mode;
  • low risk of fire and, consequently, explosion – high level of safety;
  • the permissibility of using low-quality fuel, the cost of which is low in the market.

Marine diesel can feature a wide variety of design parameters (number of cylinders, power, dimensions, etc.). This expands the scope of use of this equipment on different types of water transport.

Our company offers a huge range of marine diesel engines from proven manufacturers. We have our own warehouses on the territory of the Russian Federation. Besides, our warehouses are also located in some other European countries. This geography allows us to ensure prompt delivery of complex equipment to any point. We assist in the selection of propulsion systems for various vessels.
